PLANT OF THE MONTH

June

Echinacea

Echinacea are a valuable herbaceous perennial plant, which are commonly called purple coneflowers.
They have large, showy heads of composite flowers, blooming from early to late summer.
The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter, and if flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones are often visited by goldfinches that feed on the seeds.

We are introducing seven new varities to our list this year.

Echinacea ‘Raspberry Tart’

ech rasp

Is a compact coneflower that typically grows in an upright clump to 18” tall and spreads to as much as 24” wide on stems clad with toothed, tapering, narrow-ovate, dark green leaves.
Mildly fragrant, daisy-like coneflowers with wonderful raspberry-magenta rays and orange-bronze central cones bloom from June to early September, sometimes with sporadic later bloom to frost.

Echinacea ‘Tomato Soup’

ech tomato

This vigorous, recently introduced cultivar produces the brightest red flowers to date, up to 12cm across on upright, branching stems.
Fragrant blossoms attract butterflies. These appear for a long period from midsummer.
If you remove the spent flowers as they fade it will encourage lots more to follow, and therefore prolong the display well into autumn.
